Hemp Cottage 2009
Location
Crossgar, County Down.
Hempcrete construction.
The objective was to demonstrate how natural and low-impact materials can be used to create energy efficient buildings.
This new-build dwelling combines innovative and sustainable building construction, with a modern vernacular design which is responsive to its rural context. It is a two-bedroom house of approx 70m2 and it was originally designed for a 90 year-old and now available as a holiday let.
It is set well above the flood-level of a fast flowing river with mature beech trees to the north. The site was most exposed to public view from the road descending towards the bridge, hence the specification of a turf-roof on the northern side. Whereas the slated roof to the south reflects the local roof forms of nearby buildings including a water-mill (see project Conversion of the Old Mill).
It is of special interest to potential clients interested in sustainable materials.
